My Story
Myself and Alex are taking part in the half marathon Just Walk event on 12th May 2018 for ARC (Antenatal Results and Choices) a charity close to both of our hearts.
In August 2017 we found out that we was expecting a beautiful baby girl, we were both overjoyed and couldn't be happier. We had an early scan and everything was perfect. What was meant to be the happiest time of our life soon came crashing down. Just after 2 and a half months we was given the devastating news that our baby girl Ava-Rose had a fatal neural tube defect anencephaly/acrania and severe spina bifida. Being told that a diagnosis is not compatible with life and will inevitably result in the death of your baby before, during or very soon after the birth of your child is heartbreaking. We made the extremely difficult decision to surgically terminate our much-wanted pregnancy in November 2017.
ARC is an amazing charity that sadly you do not tend to know about until you need them. ARC came to me in my darkest hours and still offers me support through this incredibly difficult time. They are there to support and understand in a situation that few ever could. ARC continues to offer me a lifeline when I am at my lowest and not knowing where to turn to and provides these services to thousands facing similar experiences. We are taking part in this event to help raise awareness for an amazing charity that should be recognised and in memory of our beautiful angel.
ARC offers non-directive information and support to parents before, during and after antenatal screening; when they are told their baby has an anomaly; when they are making difficult decisions about continuing with or ending a pregnancy, and when they are coping with complex and painful issues after making a decision, including bereavement.
Donations will help ensure parents like myself continue to have access to ARC's range of support and information services:
- a national helpline run by trained staff, 10am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday
- a telephone support network of trained volunteers
- a website, including a moderated forum where parents can support and talk to one another
- a range of literature for parents, their families, and the health professionals caring for them
- training for health professionals who are involved in the screening process
