My Story

I am going to be running the Hackney Half Marathon on the 20th May 2018. I have decided to raise money for a little known charity called ARC. I recently found out about ARC (Antenatal Results and Choices), and was suprised to hear it is the only national charity that offers support to parents throughout antenatal screening and its consequences.

Although I have not personally witnessed the effects of a troubled pregnancy, I strongly believe, whatever your choice, the need for support and matter of fact information is extremely important. ARC offers information and non-directive advice on screening and supports parents when the screening results show their baby has an abnormality or a life threatening condition. It can be an extremely distressing and anxiety provoking time and having someone who is equipped to help you can make the greatest difference. ARC offers a free helpline to parents who can talk to a trained member of staff, as well as a forum for parents who can speak to other parents who are going through a similar situation.

Not only does ARC offer support to parents, it also provides training and access to publications to healthcare professionals that work in the field. The training is extremely beneficial as it works along side professionals to deliver difficult news in the right manner.

As ARC is a small charity, it sometimes struggles in terms of fundraising, and I am hoping that by fundraising for them I not only raise money, I also raise awareness of the good that they do. You can visit their website for more information: http://www.arc-uk.org/
